In the event of an accident, the canal is equipped with two safety gates in Waltrop and Bergkamen, which allow the canal sections in front of and behind them to be closed so that the entire canal is not emptied. This gate was built in 1985 right next to the Bergkamen power plant. There is an interesting pedestrian bridge right by the gate.
