About 20,000 years ago, the sand ridge of Wouwse Plantage was created during the last ice age. The oldest evidence of agriculture dates back to the 3rd century. In the 13th century the area was owned by the Duke of Brabant and the peat extracted from the peat reclamation was transported to the port of Bergen op Zoom. The first afforestation also took place at that time. Unfortunately, the encampments of soldiers and mercenaries caused great destruction during the Eighty Years' War.
