Great canal from which you have a very beautiful and completely different view of the city.

The Steenschuur was dug in the 13th century together with the Rapenburg as the first western ditch along the southern inner city. The moat may have been named after a stone barn that was in the area, but the question is whether a barn would be built with expensive stones at that time. The name can refer to the manufacture or storage of stones. Given the combination of "the stone" and the fact that the moat used to be called the Steengracht, after the Gravensteen, it's entirely possible that it was a barn belonging to the Steen (the Gravensteen).

Strangely enough I had never been to the old city centre of Leiden. I was really surprised during an evening walk on the beautiful canals like this one. I will definitely come back in the summer to take a walk during the day and sit on a terrace and enjoy the afterglow.
