The Lion Monument, which was erected at the end of the 18th century, is reminiscent of the extensive rock blasts carried out between 1791 and 1794, which removed a then infamous narrow passage on the steep bank of the Danube. This road extension was a very difficult, complex and very unusual construction project for the time. After completing the road widening in 1794, the Hofkammer Vice-President His Excellency Count Josef August von Toerring decided to erect a memorial there in honor of his Elector Carl-Theodor.
