Built between 1577 and 1590 to a likely design by Pellegrino Tibaldi, the basilica stood from the outset as an emblem of Novara citizenship against the increasingly oppressive presence of the absolute state founded by the Spaniards. The single-nave building was not completed until the second half of the seventeenth century and has a Latin cross plan with a late Renaissance structure.

The basilica contains numerous works of art, including an old bishop's chair. In the eighteenth-century scurolo is a silver urn containing the remains of San Gaudenzio, patron saint of the diocese.

The Chapel of the Blessed Sacrament exhibits eight seventeenth-century canvases by Fiammenghino, depicting scenes from the life of San Gaudenzio, which took place in the city.

The Chapel of the Nativity (second chapel from the left) houses a polyptych by Gaudenzio Ferrari (commissioned around 1514), belonging to the primitive church of San Vincenzo, with panels depicting the nativity scene, the Annunciation (in the upper register of the polyptych), the Virgin with the Son between Saints Rocco, Ivo and Bishops Gaudenzio and Ambrogio, Saints Peter and John the Baptist and Saints Paul and Agabio (in the lower register). The frame (with cornices and columns) of the six panels largely corresponds to the Renaissance canons.

In the Chapel of the Guardian Angel (first chapel on the left) there are frescoes by Tanzio da Varallo (1629), depicting the patron saints of the Nazari family (which was the client's family), biblical scenes, Paradise and the purgatory. These paintings, as well as the canvas depicting the Battle of Sannacherib, are the result of a taste that probably already crosses regional borders for inspiration in Central European art.

The bell tower is the work of Benedetto Alfieri (1786).

The dome, built between 1840 and 1888 by Alessandro Antonelli, is made entirely of masonry and is 121 m high.

At the top is a gilded copper statue of Christ the Redeemer, the work of Pietro Zucchi (1873).
