It was called the royal gate because of its proximity to the royal palace of Laon.
It is a double door, it consists of a gate with a portcullis, and had leaves. It was preceded by a barbican which has now disappeared. The gate is attested from the 10th century but the current structure dates from the 13th and 14th centuries. A gate was built in front of it in 1741: sculpted by Charles Hottin, it had pillars topped with lions and representations of the arms of France. It was destroyed in 1858. Below the door were a fountain and wash houses: the only ones remaining today, they were covered in the 19th century.
The gate was classified as a historic monument in 1909.

Das schönste noch erhaltene Tor der Stadtmauer. Ein paar Treppen runter steht noch eines der alten Waschhäuser. Also see.
