Thereare still people who remember a prophecy attributed to Blessed Diego José de Cádiz, an eighteenth-century Franciscan friar known in his time as the "great apostle of Spain", since he toured the entire country preaching in what were known as the popular missions. The prophecy stated that "If the Augustinians are missing from Gijón, the sea will swallow the city."
The convent of the Augustinian Recollects of Gijón, is located in the neighborhood of Somió since the 40s of the twentieth century and proudly take pride to be the first monastery that settled in the city, in the year 1670, in the building that today is known as La Tabacalera. It was the initiative of Mother Mary of São Tomé, and also functioned as a school for girls.
The nuns remained there until the confiscation, when it became, in 1842, a tobacco factory, an important industry in Gijón, with a staff made up of women.
