Calasetta was officially founded in 1770, occupying the northwestern end of Sant'Antioco. However, for 13 years already, the territory and the stretch of sea between the largest island of the Sulcis archipelago and that of San Pietro were guarded by the imposing tower which still stands today in the historic center of the town.

The Calasetta Tower was built between March 1756 and June 1757, in the middle of the Savoyard period, before the founding of Calasetta (1770). In the master plan drawn up by the engineer Pietro Belly (1770) it is stated that this is the plan of the village to be built on the island of Sant'Antioco, near the Torre di Cala di Seta. Local materials (stones and sand) were used to construct the tower. The lime was brought from Porto Paglia.

entrusted to Solerj, who probably also carried out the project. With its frustoconical shape, it generally repeats the pattern of the numerous towers that can be found at more or less regular intervals along the coasts of the Sardinian coast. At the base it has a diameter of about m. 9 and a height of about m. 12; the thickness of the surrounding walls varies from m. 070 above to m. 2.80 below.

The original entrance is approximately 5 m above ground. The interior, ventilated and lit by embrasures (today one remains, the others have been converted into real windows), is divided into three rooms: a large semicircular entrance communicating with two rear rooms half the width of the previous one. A brick staircase preserved within the thickness of the wall allows access to the terrace (parade ground). A frame (rod) made of stone other than trachyte to make it better...
