The basilica is a late Romanesque, three-aisled brick church, the interior of which was redesigned in the Baroque style.
A port town was originally supposed to be built in "Crempene", an idea that was not realized because the draft of the newer ships did not allow access to the Baltic Sea. So the port city was relocated to today's Neustadt and "Crempene" became "Oldenkrempe".
Construction of the basilica began after 1190 or at the beginning of the 13th century under Count Adolf III of Schauenburg. However, the construction period extended over a longer period of time, as can be seen from the differences in details. However, nothing is known about the builders themselves. The basilica was renovated in 1900/01 and 1974.
