Johann Wolfgang von Goethe visited the Fichtelgebirge three times, twice in Bad Alexandersbad. On his first trip in 1785, he stayed overnight in Wunsiedel, visited the then "Sichersreuther Sauerbrunnen" and went on a long hike through the Fichtelgebirge to the Ochsenkopf. As a 71-year-old, he came to the Fichtelgebirge again, where on April 25, 1820, he lodged in the "Alten Schloss" in Alexandersbad, visited the Luisenburg, and subsequently scientifically explained the granite weathering. A description that is still valid today.

Johann Wolfgang Goethe, from 1782 von Goethe (* August 28, 1749 in Frankfurt am Main; † March 22, 1832 in Weimar, Grand Duchy of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach), was a German poet and natural scientist. He is considered one of the most important creators of German-language literature.

Christian Friedrich Carl Alexander von Brandenburg-Ansbach (* 24 February 1736 in Ansbach; † 5 January 1806 in Benham Park near Speen in England) from the House of Hohenzollern was the last Margrave of the two Franconian Margraviates Brandenburg-Ansbach (since 1757) and Brandenburg-Bayreuth (since 1769). The Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg, which he significantly promoted, is partly named after him.
