In the 17th century, the Protestant town of Marktredwitz was under Bohemian - and thus Catholic - administration and was the site of an Austrian garrison. Empress Maria Theresa donated a church for her soldiers, the foundation stone of which was laid in 1776. The Roman Catholic church was consecrated on October 15, 1777. In 1785, St. Theresa's Church was elevated to the parish church of the garrison and the Catholic civilian population. The patron saint of the church is Teresa of Avila. A picture of the saint can be seen on the altarpiece.
