In the 16th century, the settlement was concentrated exclusively on the left bank of the Demer, giving old Diest the shape of a crescent moon, naturally bordered by the Demer. Today, the entire Demer river section has been reopened by a walking and cycling path. In some places, like here, the VMM has built a boardwalk, right next to or above the water. The watercourse serves as a connecting element between the rampart structure upstream and the Demer valley downstream of the city, connecting the various parks.
