Traditionally eating an ice cream at the Lekdreef! It is very nice to cycle around the abbey in this green area. There are toilets and the option to eat and drink something. Ideal stopover!
It can be a little busier here on weekends and during holidays.

The lane where all the ice cream vendors are is locally also called the 'Lekstraat'. Walking around the Abbey of Averbode is walking in top nature.

The friars of the Abbey of Averbode belong to the order founded by Saint Norbert. That is why they are called Norbertines. But they still have some names. For example, Premonstratensians refers to Prémontré, the French town where the order was founded in 1121. Their white habit explains the nickname witheren.
Norbertines, like Jesus Christ, want to spread the gospel, so that people can draw courage and confidence from it. But they also want to live up to that gospel together, as fellow brothers in a praying and serving community. In this way they strive in their lives for unity between community life, prayer and pastoral commitment.
