The starting point of the Waldenburg town fortifications was the castle and keep built around 1200. Soon after, the high watchtower and the shield wall were built. They protected the southern end of the mountain plateau.
Beyond the "Bear Pit", the Schanz with shield wall, towers, battlements, casemates and a new gate system was built by 1495 as an outwork. The walled-up gate of the town entrance is still visible....
