Franciscan Church, Solothurn
In 1280, Franciscan monks (Barfüsser) founded a settlement in Solothurn.
The first Franciscan church was consecrated in 1299. After a fire in 1426, the church was rebuilt as a late Gothic mendicant order church. Remains from this era can still be seen in the shape of the choir windows.
During the Reformation, the monastery was deserted and the Bernese reformer Berchthold Haller preached in the Franciscan church. In 1546, monks moved back into the monastery. During the ambassadorial period, the church became the "court church" of the French ambassadors and was subsequently decorated with baroque altars. The baptismal chapel, which is still well preserved today, gives an impression of the furnishings at that time. The high altar received a new altarpiece (Assumption of Mary), donated by the Sun King, Louis XIV.

In 1823/25 the church was redesigned in the classicist style. This appearance characterizes the church to this day.

During the period of the Kulturkampf, the church fell to the state after the monastery was abolished.
