Bieltor, Solothurn
The Bieltor was built in the 13th century and is integrated into the former medieval city wall. It was rebuilt several times until it got its current appearance. On the outside, a copy of the figure of the city's patron saint, St. Urs, greets those who arrive. In 1623 Gregor Bienckher created one of the most beautiful sculptures from the brittle Solothurn limestone. The original can be admired in the Stone Museum. Coat of arms reliefs also adorn the inside and outside of the gate. The tower served as a prison for centuries, and the top floor housed the tower guard's apartment. During the ambassador period, the newly arriving ambassador was greeted in front of the Bieltor with a cannon salute.
