The Baseltor was part of the former city fortifications of Solothurn. Solothurn previously owned the Eichtor on the eastern outskirts of the city, where Hans Roth thwarted the Solothurn murders on November 10, 1382. After the Swabian War, master craftsman Hans Gibelin replaced the wooden Eichtor at the eastern entrance to the city with the Baseltor in 1504. The Baseltor is made of Solothurn stone (Jura limestone). Together with the St.Ursenturm, the mighty gate forms a magnificent group of architects.
