The original nucleus of the palace dates back to the 13th century, when it was called “Palazzo dei Priori” or “Palazzo della Comunità”. The current palace was built in 1444 by Nanni di Magio at the request of the elders of Piombino, who until that year met in the ancient Palazzaccio, a building that has not come down to us and was probably located at the corner of via “Trapalazzi”, today's via Giuseppe Garibaldi.

The tower dates back to 1598. The palace, like the tower, was the subject of an extensive and controversial restoration operation in 1933–1937, under the direction of the Sienese architect Egisto Bellini.
