When it opened as Alexander Park in 1865, it was the first park in Tbilisi. Today it bears the name "Park of April 9th" and commemorates the 20 dead and hundreds injured in a military operation against peaceful demonstrators on April 9, 1989.

One of the oldest parks in Tbilisi known for its trees and dramatic sculptures, is 9th April Park, previously called Alexander's park, on the opposite side from the Georgian Parliament building along Rustaveli Avenue. It was named after the events of 1989 during an anti-Soviet demonstration on the 9th of April, when Soviet troops were deployed to repress the protests for Georgian independence.
