Cotton grass, moor frog, sundew and grass snake: the Salem moor is the habitat of many rare animal and plant species. Its diversity makes it unique. A high moor, natural mixed forests and a chain of different lakes form this nature reserve, which is one of the oldest in Schleswig-Holstein. The lakes impress with their diversity. The nutrient-poor Garrensee, the moor lake Schwarze Kuhle and two other nutrient-rich lakes offer a home for very different residents. The male moor frogs, which turn blue for a few days during their mating season in spring, entice visitors to a special spectacle.
