The village of Viscri (German Weisskirch) on the Transylvanian plateau near Sighișoara (Schäßburg) was founded by Transylvanian Saxons in the 12th century. It was not until 1231 that the probably much older, very remote village was first mentioned in a document as a gift from King Béla IV to "Corradus et Danielem" (sons of John). In 1400, "Alba ecclesia" (alias Viscri) appears in a local directory for tax payments in the county of Rupea (Kosd). Around 1500, Viscri was counted among the county's free communities, with 51 households, three shepherds, a teacher and two poor people. Today, the village's main street and side streets are lined with lovingly restored Transylvanian-Saxon farms, all the way up to the well-preserved fortified church.

In Deutsch-Weisskirch, the particularly well and almost completely preserved ensemble of rural architecture typical of the region gives a very authentic picture of Transylvanian villages at the beginning of the 19th century. Due to their great cultural and historical value, the village center and the fortified church were included in the UNESCO list in 1999 - listed as a World Heritage Site.

After the exodus of the Transylvanian Saxons in the early 1990s, it became difficult to maintain the ensemble. Help came through an English foundation, the Mihai Eminescu Trust (MET). Around the year 2000, the MET began to develop ideas and concepts for preserving the traditional townscape together with local and new villagers. Building on this, it has been possible in recent years to repair numerous farmhouses using traditional techniques and to give the village new economic perspectives through gentle cultural tourism.

The isolated settlement became the centre of attention due to Prince Charles who has bought a house here and became the chief sponsor of the foundation for Saxon villages.
