Bike Touring Highlight (Segment)
The HOAG route is the former railway line of the "Hüttenwerke Oberhausen Aktiengesellschaft", hence the name. Like many other old railway lines, the approximately twelve-kilometer-long route connecting Oberhausen and Duisburg has been converted into a sizeable cycle path. Since 2007 you can cycle here from the Rhine port in Duisburg Walsum to Oberhausen Buschhausen.
A nice way to extend the bike ride is the Green Path, which starts directly afterwards. About the old route you come back to Duisburg. A beautiful destination is, for example, the landscape park Duisburg Nord, which is located directly on the green path. The landscape park is one of many steel industry spots in the Ruhr area that has successfully made the transition to a cultural hotspot.

Super nice old industrial railway route developed as a bike path.
Car-free and almost without crossings.
But I would have preferred a continuously paved route.

The railway line of the former Hüttenwerke Oberhausen Aktiengesellschaft (HOAG) connects the Duisburg district of Walsum with Oberhausen Sterkrade. The HOAG route was originally used for coal transport from the Sterkrade colliery to the Rhine port in Walsum.

The HOAG - route leads you on the shortest way to the Rhine. Glorious to drive undisturbed by cars. At the end of the HOAG - route you drive over the Roman road and ferry road to the ferry in Walsum. There you can cross the Rhine.

HOAG stands for "Hüttenwerke Oberhausen AG" is the forerunner of the later Thyssen-Niederrhein AG. The HOAG route was the track connection between the port in DU-Walsum and the metallurgical works in Oberhausen (today CentrO). Iron ore, coke etc. were transported from the Rhine port to Oberhausen on freight trains. Thyssen-Niederrhein AG had its own locomotives. This was serviced and repaired in the former engine shed in OB-Osterfeld (opposite the Ripshorst house and Geholzgarten).
