One of the most famous statues, emphatically linked to the sea and the maritime character of the city, is the monument to the famous naval guardian, Michiel de Ruyter, born in Vlissingen (1607). Founded in 1841 on De Ruyterplein.

The Vlissingse Maatschap voor Nut van 't Algemeen decided in 1830 to erect a monument. The statue was designed by L. Royer. The "little dog" under the cloak is the hilt knob of his ornamental sword, depicting a lion's head. The paint layer on the cast iron statue must prevent the effect of salt. The bronze cannons were donated by the Italian government in 1905 and were fished up in the Strait of Messina.

In 1894 it gets its present place on the Bolwerk overlooking the sea. This also applies to the statue of the pilot and rescuer Frans Naerebout, which was placed in the Bellamy Park in 1952 and relocated in 2007 on Boulevard de Ruyter.
