      History of the station area
In the past, Vlissingen had not one but 2 stations, 'Vlissingen City' and 'Vlissingen Centrum'. 'Vlissingen Stad' station was opened in 1873, at the same time as the Canal through Walcheren.
The station was located at the lock in the Channel and was a so-called 'water management station'. This station was closed in 1894 and completely demolished around 1946.
New construction in 1894 and 1949-1950
The original building of 'Vlissingen Haven' made way for a much larger building in the Neo-Renaissance style in 1894. The building had a special waiting room for royal persons that was used by kings, emperors, grand princes and other noble persons on their way to or from England. During the Second World War, this station was irreparably damaged during a bombing.
The current station building was built between 1949 and 1950 to replace it. Parts of the platforms, platform roof and walls of the pre-war station were retained. After the war, the addition 'Haven' was also deleted from the name and the station was simply called 'Vlissingen'. The official opening of the building took place on December 18, 1950.
      Unique location
The station area is now in a unique location: surrounded by water, at the terminus of a railway line, at a junction of highway (A58) and waterway and adjacent to industrial estates and port areas (inner harbour, outer harbour, Vlissingen-Oost).
But the opportunities offered by this location are not sufficiently exploited. These opportunities are described in the Vlissingen Station Area 2025 Vision.
