The square can be reached relatively quickly by train from Poprad-Tatry. Here you can also buy tickets for the different directions and lines. I find the prices really cheap. I didn't have a problem with the language either.

Hiking
The station in Starý Smokovec is the largest transfer station on the Tatra Railway. There are trains here every hour in three directions.
