The name Trepponti, originating from the word tre (three) and ponti (bridge) refers to the split in the canal underneath the bridge - however, technically speaking the Trepponti bridge consists of not three but five stone arch bridges, as the Sant'Agostino and San Petro canals that made up the old Comacchio moat also intersect the canal here. The five bridges are connected by a central Istrian stone floor that makes up a small pentagonally-shaped public square, held up by a cross-vaulted ceiling.

A symbol of the city and one of the most important civic monuments, the Trepponti is also known as Ponte Pallotta, from the name of the cardinal legate Giovan Battista Pallotta, who in the early decades of the seventeenth century ordered its construction by the architect Luca Danese from Ravenna. Located at the crossroads of the four main canals that branch off from the city, it once represented the fortified gateway to the town. The initial design of the pentarch bridge underwent some aesthetic and functional adaptations over the years, until it reached its current appearance: five large staircases culminate in a central elevation completely in Istrian stone, around which two guard towers and six small pillars stand out. The same architect also designed Ponte San Pietro and Ponte degli Sbirri.
