The building that now houses the Town Hall of Portoferraio was commissioned by Cosimo I to open a bakery that could produce bread for the garrisons and the new Medici town (and later for the entire island of Elba). The current appearance of the building dates back to renovations carried out in the 19th century. On the façade, a memorial stone commemorates the period when Napoleon was in exile on the island of Elba. In the courtyard there is a copy of a sacrificial altar from Roman times dedicated to Hercules (now on display in the Archaeological Museum della Linguella), donated by Publius Acilius Attianus, the then prefect who lived between the 1st and 2nd centuries AD and was probably the owner of the Roman Villa delle Grotte.
