The beginnings of the place can be traced back with certainty to 1470. The first artificial harbor was built on the Weser between 1619 and 1623, and what quickly developed into a flourishing town around this harbor took its name from the old jug house "Thom Fegesacke", which is said to have existed as early as 1500.
