The town hall, except for the outer walls, was destroyed by fire during the shelling of September 17, 1914. The spire of the belfry and the 40 bells of the carillon were also destroyed. Many valuable paintings and the old city archives were lost. The town hall was rebuilt in 1920 under the leadership of city architect Alexis Sterck (Dendermonde), the 19th-century wings were replaced in 1924 by neo-Gothic wings designed by city architect Fernand de Ruddere (Dendermonde). The interior was designed in neo-Gothic style with influences from Bruges and Brabant Gothic.

A double-headed eagle, installed in 1548, adorns the tower as a symbol of power and vigilance. Inside is a complete carillon of 49 bells, cast by bell founder Sergeys from Leuven. This carillon plays automatically every fifteen minutes and is also played manually during concerts.
