Tips

  • The town hall, except for the outer walls, was destroyed by fire during the shelling of September 17, 1914. The spire of the belfry and the 40 bells of the carillon were also destroyed. Many valuable paintings and the old city archives were lost. The town hall was rebuilt in 1920 under the leadership of city architect Alexis Sterck (Dendermonde), the 19th-century wings were replaced in 1924 by neo-Gothic wings designed by city architect Fernand de Ruddere (Dendermonde). The interior was designed in neo-Gothic style with influences from Bruges and Brabant Gothic.
