Sarzana is a city rich in history. In fact, it is characterized by fifteenth-century fortresses, imposing walls and ancient towers. It is located in the Lower Val di Magra, a stone's throw from the regional border with Tuscany.

The city on the Magra River was first mentioned by the Roman-German Emperor Otto I.
The Buonaparte family comes from here, known as a patrician family from around 1200, which moved to Corsica around 1490.
The city offers two fortresses.

In 963 the Roman-German Emperor Otto I transferred ownership of "castrum Sarzanae" to Adalberto Bishop of Alibi. From this, today's Sarzana developed over time
