The historical roots of the Messinghof go far back. It was probably one of the possessions that Liudger transferred to his Werden monastery in Essen around 800 AD in the course of his proselytizing of the Saxons. From the late 11th century it belonged to the Mauritz Abbey in Münster. Such a plan form of the moats, avenue trees and the location of the court chapel outside the court island can also be found in the architectural canon of aristocratic building in the Münsterland.
