The granaries at Vindolanda were the main storage facilities for the fort.
The eastern granary was partitioned in the middle in the 4th century and transformed into a shop.
The western granary remained a store building until the end of Roman Britain.

After the Romans left, both granaries were converted into houses. People may have lived inside the granaries for a further 500 years.
