The workpiece on which the Upper Franconian craftsman is working was part of what is probably the best-known tree in the Lonnerstadt district. A roughly 250-year-old oak tree that has its roots above the beer cellars on a dirt road on the outskirts. Only a few meters of the once 22 meter high shade are left. After a last unsuccessful rescue attempt seven years ago, only the tree stump is now standing. It measures more than six meters in circumference at the bottom. The fruit and horticultural association Fetzelhofen-Ailsbach secured the dead natural monument with a steel cable and struts. Namely, it stands extremely precipitously in a place where the stump could endanger hikers or vehicles.
The tree stump is well secured.
And then Herrmann Popp, the Fetzelhofen innkeeper and tree caretaker, had an idea: You could use part of the trunk cut off for safety reasons to support the remaining stump. So that it doesn't look too rudimentary, the Fetzelhofen-based company wanted to give the project a creative touch.
The Rübezahl gets color. The nature conservation authorities are also involved in the campaign. They want to know that the remains of the once mighty oak have been preserved as a biotope tree. Such are known to serve insects as a habitat. The beehive, which is to be placed in the cavity of the trunk, is also in this spirit.
