The Frankish imperial annals reported in 822 in connection with the collapse of a salt dome from Arnseo - the Arendsee.

In 1183, the monastery Arendsee was founded, a Benedictine monastery, the Margrave Otto I, son Albrecht of the Bear, had donated. The Romanesque abbey church, which dates from 1185, has been preserved.

The city rights received Arendsee in 1457 under Elector Frederick II of Brandenburg. During the Thirty Years' War, the city of Arendsee was plundered several times. In 1685, the mill of the village sank in a salt dump in the lake and helped it to its present form. He is the largest burglary lake in northern Germany. In 1831 a chapel burned down in the village since about 1381. 1881/82, the present St. John's Church was built. From 1910, the walking preacher Gustaf Nagel erected the now only partially preserved Gustaf-Nagel site on the banks of the Arendsee. From 1939, the 1837/38 built for the city school house was used as the town hall Arendsee. In 1942, HJ Marineschüler destroyed the gustaf nagels garden and temple complex.

In GDR times Arendsee had a significant tourism show. The lake and its surroundings were in moderation a substitute for the Baltic Sea beach. Numerous holiday homes and a campsite served as accommodation. Since the reunification, the number of day trippers has remained high, but the number of overnight stays has fallen sharply. The children's holiday camp KiEZ Arendsee offers holiday camp offers since GDR times. It was built and maintained by VEB Schwermaschinenbau "Karl Liebknecht" Magdeburg. At that time it bore the name of the Chairman of the KPF Maurice Thorez.

The district Arendsee (Altmark) has the status of a state-approved health resort. The city belonged until June 30, 1994 to the district Osterburg.

Arendsee has a long history dating back to the Middle Ages. The town was first mentioned in documents in 1270. Lake Arendsee itself has always played a central role in the town's life, both as a fishing water and as a recreational area. Arendsee's market square has a rich history and was redesigned after a town fire in 1831.

Today, Arendsee is a quiet but popular town in the Altmark region, particularly appreciated for its natural beauty and historical sights. The fountain on Arendsee's market square, often called the "Goose Fountain," is a central focal point of the town. The town has become an attractive destination for visitors who enjoy both history and nature. The lake promenade and the Gustaf Nagel area are popular spots, and bike rides around the lake offer a relaxing way to explore the surrounding area.

With well-developed trails and a variety of sights, the region is ideal for a bike tour through Arendsee and the surrounding area. The tranquil atmosphere, coupled with historic charm, makes Arendsee a perfect destination for cyclists seeking a blend of nature and culture.

Arendsee is a pretty, small place with a nice, big lake. There is a path around the lake that you can walk or cycle on. There are many ways to access the water, many jetties, sandy beaches and an outdoor pool (in the lake) with a grandstand. I like to come here every now and then with my bike and my photo equipment (from Dannenberg) to look for beautiful motifs that you can always find on such a lake. Especially during sunrise and sunset, there are often beautiful cloud and light moods, as well as great reflections on the water.
