The beautiful Mausoleum of José de San Martín in the Metropolitan Cathedral just off Paza de Mayo is the final resting place of the liberator of Argentina and is guarded around the clock by two rather smart and imposing Granaderos.

San Martín was born in Yapeyú in Argentina but completed his military studies in Spain, where he fought against Napoleon. On his return he founded the Regimiento de Granaderos a Caballo and commanded the Army of the North of the country where he is famed for crossing the Cordilleras de Los Andes with his troops in very harsh condition into Chile to fight the Spanish army there where he eventually won all of his major battles. He is deemed to be the greatest Argentine hero and liberator of Argentina, Chile and Peru of Perú in 1821.

He eventually died in France and when he was returned home for buriel only seven of the original Granaderos were still alive. They marched down to the boat in full uniform to escort their commander where they took him to the cathedral and stood guard all night. These days, keeping with this beautiful military tradition, each morning seven Granaderos march from the Casa Rosada each morning where two of them remain on guard all day.

The Mausoleum of General San Martín in the Cathedral of the City of Buenos Aires begins its history in 1864. During the presidency of Bartolomé Miter, two national deputies, Martín Ruiz Moreno and Adolfo Alsina, presented a bill to repatriate the embalmed remains of San Martín. They rested in one of the chapels of the Basilica of Notre-Dame de Boulogne Sur Mer (France). The bill read:

"The Executive will immediately take the necessary steps to hand over the remains of the meritorious General José de San Martín to the Argentine Republic."

But only on April 11, 1877, the then President Nicolas Avellaneda signed the decree creating a commission responsible for the repatriation of the hero's remains.

It was not until May 28, 1880 that the remains of the Liberator of America arrived on board the ARA Villarino.

A very beautiful cathedral, which is no longer entirely original as it has been built and dismantled seven times so far. Hopefully it will stand a little longer now.😂 What's nice to see is how the graves are guarded and guards come every 2 hours to replace each other with a nice ritual
