One of the oldest half-timbered houses on the Mühlen Canal

The oldest surviving components are in the brickwork made of humped blocks on the lower floor of the Ihlinger Tower, which was first mentioned in 1273. The brickwork of the upper floors probably dates from around 1400, roughly the same time as the existing city wall. After 1500, the gate lost its defensive function and was used as a prison tower. This also allowed the residential castle to be built without considering the defensive capabilities of the old city wall. The building, which was once one floor lower, is dendrochronologically dated to the winter of 1518/19. Above the ground floor, which was only divided by four massive wooden supports, there was a full residential floor and above that the five attic floors. From 1706, the von Stuben family lived in the castle and undertook extensive structural changes to the building over a period of three years. The roof was raised to create another full residential floor, the facade was adapted to contemporary tastes and the room layout and size was changed. In addition, the so-called chapel extension with a square corner tower was built. In 1758, the castle came into the possession of the Geßler family, who set up a silk weaving and dyeing factory on the lower floors and created large window and door openings for it. The Geßler family rounded off the property in 1815 with the purchase of the Ihlinger Gate. In 1879, the castle went to the artists Hausch and Bayer, under whose succession major structural interventions took place between 1909 and 1911, in particular the intermediate building and the inner courtyard were replaced or renovated.

A beautiful half-timbered house in a great location on the river.
