The canal was built in the 1930s as part of the National Socialist industrialization policy to supply the Hermann Göring Works (today Salzgitter AG) with raw materials and to transport finished products.
To this day, it serves as a central waterway connection for the Salzgitter region and is essential for the transport of coal, ores, steel products, and other goods.
