On a small hill south of the town square - towering above the town of Payerbach - rises the former fortified church, Payerbach's landmark next to the viaduct. The founding of the parish church with the patron saint St. James the Elder took place around the middle of the 12th century. With its 29 meter high tower, it can be seen from afar and is an important point for the many pilgrims and campaigners on their way. The church is under monument protection.

Unfortunately it was closed and it was not clear when it would be open except for the mass celebrations 🤔 but it was spacious from the outside and there is still a lot to see right next to it. Especially the sequoia in the garden 🏡
