In Roman times, the square of the city most likely stood on a wooden building on an earthen mound: a motte. In the 8th century, a first Merovingian villa is said to belong to an important landowner named Egino. It may be the beginning of a city that took its name from its founder. In the year 1000, a small octagonal fortress is built around a courtyard. The moats disappear in the 16th century. The chapel within the fortress walls was built on the remains of the castle tower in the 19th century. On June 21, 1002, a famous person, Bruno from Eguisheim, was born in the castle.
The chapel is dedicated to him, because he became pope under the name of Leo IX (1049 - 1054)
