On 11.21. and March 22, 1945, English and American units flew attacks against Stadtlohn where 90% of the city was destroyed and 296 people lost their lives. and which was recorded on the maps of the German army command as the fortress "Veronika". The fighting ended with the invasion of the British on March 29, 1945. To protect the city, a 3m deep and approx. 8m wide anti-tank ditch was dug. The ditch extended south of Stadtlohn through the western plain to the road to Vreden. Towards the rear, concrete shelters with machine gun nests had been built in this area. The narrower urban area was surrounded with a network of trenches and trenches. Here in the photo you can see a concrete shelter from the machine gun nests of the time (one-man bunker). There are 3 of them in total.
