The park was laid out in 1906 for the Bavarian State Exhibition. The Luitpoldhain is named after the Bavarian Prince Regent Luitpold (1821-1912). In 1927 and 1929, the NSDAP held their Nazi party rallies here, later mass marches by NS organizations such as the SA and SS took place with up to 150,000 participants. Stone grandstands were also built, remains of which can still be seen. After 1945, the city of Nuremberg turned the area back into a park. Since the year 2000, open-air classical concerts have been held in the Luitpoldhain every year.

In 2000, Nuremberg celebrated its 950th birthday. The best gift to the citizens were the classical open-air concerts in the Luitpoldhain. Today, the grandiose guest performances by the Nuremberg State Philharmonic and the Nuremberg Symphony Orchestra are an integral part of the summer program. The Classic Open Air is now the largest of its kind in Europe. Over 70,000 music enthusiasts make the pilgrimage to the park every year in July and August for a picnic with free admission.
