When the Napoleonic army retreated after the Battle of Leipzig, the two unknown French soldiers were buried in the woods around Faßmannsreuth in 1813. The care of the graves over the centuries led to the town twinning between Rehau and Bourgoin-Jallieu.
In the past, there were simple wooden crosses on both burial mounds. In 1936, the Rehau woodcarver Lorenz Muggenthaler made the wooden crosses, which were then removed in 1987 due to weather conditions and replaced with new ones.
