Here you can make an exciting trip to the world of "white gold". With a conveyor cage you first drive to 500 meters depth. With trucks that are equipped with seats, then the ride goes well 20 km underground on 800 m depth to the world's unique crystal grotto. Deep beneath the green hills of the Rhön, the forces of nature have created a fascinating crystal grotto in millions of years. Sparkling salt crystals of unique size. In addition, visitors can admire the advances in potash mining technology from their beginnings to the present day, and take a tour of the legendary Reichsbank treasure in the historic gold room. In 1945, the gold treasure of the Reichsbank and stored art works were captured here by American troops. The generals Eisenhower, Bradley and Patton were here personally "underground".

Highly recommended are the MTB tours that take place in the winter months (but only on a few weekends). The exact dates can be found on the homepage of the mine. The 20 km will then be covered with your own bike. Escort vehicles follow the tour to accommodate people and bicycles when needed. After all, here are several hundred meters difference in altitude to deal with.
It's a unique experience with up to 17% incline.
The tour lasts about 5 hours with a final meal together.

A really worthwhile mine trip by mountain bike to the Merkers potash mine. The tour offers a lot of interesting things and things worth seeing. For example, in the large bunker you can find the largest shovel excavator ever used underground. In the gold room we were also told a lot of interesting facts about the treasures of the German Reichsbank that were stored there during World War II. And the crystal grotto at a depth of 800m is a real feast for the eyes. But the best thing about it were the prevailing temperatures between 21°C and 28°C, even during our visit in December.

Quite demanding in terms of sport (some climbs of 15% and 17%), but absolutely worthwhile with spectacular views (e.g. crystal cave, gold room, concert hall, etc...).
If the tour by bike is too strenuous or even too dangerous, you can always get on an escort truck.
Due to the sometimes very rough and slippery surface, suitable tires and suspension are recommended. Simple street bikes are quickly overwhelmed.
With my standard gravel bike, without suspension, I would not do this tour again. On the steep descents, it shook me so hard that I even dropped my glasses once and the tires kept slipping on the ascents. Once I had to get off and push a bit because I couldn't make any headway.
Attention: you are on the road for a good 3 hours in the dark. The route is only partially and very sparsely lit. Replacement lighting should therefore be included. The battery of my helmet lamp was empty at some point and the lamp on the handlebars alone was quite tight.
Despite everything, an incredibly great experience and absolutely recommendable!
The all-round service was also excellent. The guide and everyone who took care of us were very attentive, helpful and friendly at all times.
              A top event!

We were here with the MTB in the mine. There are only a few appointments, so you have to take care of it early. There were 2 dates this year. On one day, 2 groups of 50 cyclists were out and about.
Sounds like a lot, but it isn't. The group stretches out and it's easy to ride. The usual stops as with a normal tour with a lecture and presentation are also available.
2 hours pure driving time, about 3.5 hours with the breaks and lectures. With food about 5 hours.
3/4 were on the road with e-bikes. The guide who drove up drove like us with muscle power.
Waiting for the last ones at certain points. Escort vehicles and paramedics are there if technology is defective or you run out of breath.
Good lighting is required as much of the route is not lit.
It's 18 to 28 degrees in the mine, which should be taken into account.
488 vertical meters have to be driven down over the 20km and screwed up again. maximum incline 17%
                A unique experience!!
