The water tower, also known by the local population as the “Chateau d’eau”, has been a listed building since 1985 and is an eight-story, round brick building. It was built in 1897 by the Gutehoffnungshütte (GHH) as a replacement for the city's water supply. The water was pumped into the approximately 50 meter high tower via three pressure lines and stored there in an elevated tank. The steel water tank served as a pressure equalization tank for the Oberhausen ironworks until 1965. Until 1978, the two lower floors of the tower were only used as offices.
