Location: Wismar, Northwest Mecklenburg, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Germany
The water gate in Wismar on the waterway in the northwest of the city's historic city center is a harbor gate of the Hanseatic city in the brick Gothic style and the last remaining of five city gates of the Wismar city fortifications. The leading street is called Spiegelberg. It was also the only beach or harbor gate through which you could enter the city directly from the harbor. The others, all land gates, were the Poeler Tor or Haraldstor in the north (high gate tower with defensive core, named after the island of Poel), the Mecklenburg Gate (high gate tower with defensive core) in the south, and the Lübsche Tor (since 1699 similar to the Wassertor). Triangular gable, original striking high gate tower) in the west and the Altwismartor or Rostocker Tor (staggered gable gate building with roof top, onion roof and lantern) as a counterpart in the east, each at the end of the street of the same name. To the south of the water gate there was a “water gate” as a wall passage for the pit, an artificial water arm that ran east-west like a canal from the 13th century, and in the southeast there was a wind gate.
