For Wismar, the Hanseatic period began on September 6, 1259, when envoys from Lübeck and Rostock met in Wismar and sealed the protection treaty. By the Middle Ages, the city was an important member of the Hanseatic League. From 1238 to 1250 the new town of Wismar came into being, and Wismar reached the extent it lasted until the 18th century. The Speicherstadt was built in the harbor from 1862. The first warehouse was built and in 1888 the new grand ducal customs office was established.
