The water gate is the last existing of originally 5 city gates. Its architectural style is classified in the brick Gothic style and thus fits perfectly into the historical cityscape. At that time it was an integral part of the city defense system.

The weir system had a gate in the north, the Poeler Tor, in the south the Mecklenburger Tor, in the west the Lübsche Tor, in the east the Rostocker Tor and the gate to the harbor, the still preserved water gate.
