Haderslev's old market square, Torvet, has been the center of market trade and town life for centuries. But in the second half of the 19th century, the rush to the market on market days became so great that it was decided to create a completely new market place. The choice fell on an area that was previously unused moorland, and so in 1880 the market place Gravene was inaugurated.

Initially only the cattle market was moved to Gravene, but soon houses were built around the newly created square and Gravene became a central square in the city. In 1923 all market trade moved from Torvet to Gravene, and Gravene has been Haderslev's central trading place ever since.

Today the Gravene is right next to the pedestrian zone, surrounded by shops, restaurants and bars. You can rest on the comfortable benches and enjoy an ice cream while looking at the well-known buildings such as the Winds Bogtrykkeri book printing works and the old post house. In the middle of the square you will find the beautiful fountain.

BY THE WAY you can still experience market day on the Gravene every Tuesday and Friday morning, where you can buy everything from fresh fruit and vegetables to fish and cheese.
