Share As one of the most famed traditional teahouses in Chengdu, the Singing Crane Teahouse has a history of over 90 years since its establishment in 1923. Undergone several warfares throughout the 9 decades, it has persisted in operation till today. Established by a Mr. Gong from the Dayi County, the teahouse was named after the Heming Mountain in Dayi, which was the cradle of Taoism and the place where Zhang Daoling became immortal, as well as the producing area of the Heming Tea. In the early 1920s, Mr. Gong leased a plot of land in the park and built a pavilion for the teahouse. Its name ‘Heming’ on the plaque was inscribed by calligrapher Wang Jiaxiang. The mixture of Chinese style architecture, lakeside corridor, low tables, bamboo chairs, tea served in covered bowls, long-spout pots, ear-picking and fortune-telling services formed the unique charm of the Singing Crane Teahouse. During the Republican period, clients of the teahouse were mostly school faculty and staff, as well as civil servants who had unstable jobs and frequently came together to share information. During the vacations of lunar June and December, civil servants and teachers who faced the risk of unemployment and competed for the positions came to the Singing Crane Teahouse everyday waiting for their offers. This phenomena was derided ‘Battles in Lunar June and December’ by the old generation of Chengdu citizens. The core building of the teahouse is a two-storey Chinese style structure. Its interior walls are decorated with reliefs that record the historical changes of the teahouse. The teahouse accommodates 3000 clients at most, even today when upscale teahouses have sprung up in great numbers, the Singing Crane Teahouse stands out with its unique flavor of western Sichuan folk customs, and transmits the special taste of Chengdu to its clients. In 2012, the Singing Crane Teahouse was listed among the 1st batch of Protected Historic Buildings in Chengdu, as an extant long-standing teahouse nationwide.
