"The Westerlicht lighthouse is located in Haamstede and is one of the largest lighthouses in the Netherlands. The tower was designed by L. Valk and built in 1837. The lighthouse served as a source of inspiration for the former 250 guilder banknote.
With a height of 53 meters (above ground) and a light height of 58 meters above sea level, Vuurtoren Westerlicht is one of the largest lighthouses in the Netherlands. The light from the tower reaches 30 nautical miles and the lantern has an intensity of 5.2 million candelas.
The base of the tower consists of walls about 2.5 meters thick, which become increasingly thinner towards the top. It is painted with a red and a white band that spiral upwards. This painting was installed as a warning to low-flying aircraft only a century after it was constructed. The lighthouse's partly stone, partly iron staircase has 226 steps.
The Westerlicht lighthouse is no longer manned. The radar image is transmitted to the coast guard post in Ouddorp. The lighthouse is not open to the public."
